Recently exhibited

Shall we stay on the monoprint theme? Well sure, here are some more! My screens from last week are not quite ready yet, so here are some works exhibited earlier this year.

I find there is no greater drawing challenge than trying to capture the human form. These works are based on life drawings created in my evening class.

Exhibited in Life Drawing 2011 at Gravelly Barn, Herts.
Using a pencil, I trace my original drawing onto a fresh sheet.
Inking up my plate, retrace the pencil lines to pick up an inky figure.

These prints were made using a printing press, creating several layers of colour by blocking out areas with stencils.
This is a monochromatic monoprint. Mono!

Created simply, by drawing directly onto an inked up plate with my fingers. Pressing a fresh sheet onto the plate, I rolled a clean roller over top (Look closely and you can see the roller marks in the ink).

It's always exciting to see what comes out when you pull back the paper to expose the print. Different every time.

Using the same original life drawing as the one above but with warm Autumn colours this time. It's similar to the other image, but with it's own characteristics and individual marks.

Exhibited in 'Life Drawing 2011' at Gravelly Barn, Herts.

New House

New house!

Yes, that's right, I've moved again. This is my 13th move in the last 6 years, perhaps this house will be one I settle in for a while? I always say that...

Anyway, new place means new ideas and inspiration of course. I now live amongst the slate roof tops in an attic apartment. It's a Grade 2 listed property from the early 19th century, screaming with old school character, rustic beams and uneven surfaces in abundance. Lately I have been enjoying making work to do with my spaces around me. Working with the idea of memory and what stories certain spaces hold within.

This weekend I ventured round the flat (yes, in my pj's!) collecting monoprints from found textures. I hope to use these prints later for putting onto a screen and printing in different colours onto fabrics. Working with layering and mixing the print with stitch and applique for a new canvas  - but that's another post!

As mentioned in previous posts, monoprinting is a fave process of mine, where no two prints are the same. Here I have an inked up roller which is rolled onto newsprint. The ink picks up the raised textures underneath the paper which provides the most interesting of mark making.

Closer view of prints taken from wooden beams.

The kitchen tiles create a mottled effect, yet still with defined square shapes.

Number four? No, no. Just more beams.

Textures are everywhere you look. My dressing table has a cute flower motif (or is it a flame??), the print version in blue above.
